MMANC and Recognition

In 1984 MMANC initiated an annual Awards Program, which in its conception, was chaired by then-MMANC officers Terry Jewell and Dave Van Kirk.

Over time, several different awards have been developed, providing each MMANC Board of Directors with flexibility in recognizing achievement and promise in the profession and in service to the organization.

Wes McClure Outstanding Assistant Award

The Outstanding Assistant Award was created in 1984 and named in honor of Wes McClure, City Manager of San Leandro from 1948 to 1976, who was an enthusiastic supporter of MMANC.  The award was designed to recognize outstanding achievement and exemplary commitment in work performed by a Full Member of MMANC, plus dedication to the profession. Nominations are solicited from members as well as from local government chief executives throughout Northern California.

Honorary Members

Full Members of MMANC who are appointed to a chief executive officer position in a local government agency become Honorary Members of MMANC.  This recognition entitles the member to lifetime membership in MMANC.  The Honorary Member category was created to acknowledge the role that MMANC plays in developing and preparing its members for local government chief executive officer positions.  The first recipients in 1984 were those individuals who had been president of MMANC and who had later advanced to a chief executive officer position.  Two subsequent recipients were recognized for their contributions to the profession and to MMANC, and all other recipients from 1985-2001 have been Full Members of MMANC at the time they were promoted to a local government chief executive officer position.  In 2002, the MMANC Board of Directors was given the authority to again grant honorary membership to individuals based on their contributions to the profession and/or the organization.

President’s Award

This award is presented at the President’s discretion to a member who has provided enthusiastic support to MMANC during the year.

Ed Sajor Memorial Student Award

This award seeks to recognize outstanding Student Members who attend a recognized professional school for the purpose of entering into the profession of public administration or local government management.  The award was named in honor of the late Ed Sajor, a PG&E executive who was very supportive of the California City Management Foundation and who passed away in 1987.  The award includes a free registration to the MMANC Annual Conference and is open to students who meet MMANC membership qualifications.

Booster Award

The Booster Award is presented to a non-MMANC professional or organization that has significantly supported MMANC both as an organization and its activities.  Recipients have included city managers, consultants, League of California Cities staff, and corporate partners.

Regional Professional Awards

In order to encourage participation by members in all five regions of MMANC, this award provides Region chairs the opportunity to select a member who has shown MMANC-related support and enthusiasm in their region over the course of a year.  It is the regional equivalent to the MMANC President’s Award.

Longstanding and Continued Support Award

This award is presented to a deserving individual who has provided longstanding consistent support for the organization.

Service Award

This award is presented to members who are not officers, nor winners of other awards, but nonetheless are deserving of recognition for their participation in and contributions to the organization during the year.
