12:00 – 1:00 pm

The Great Plates Delivered program is a double bottom line, locally-administered, FEMA-funded senior meal delivery program that California started in response to the pandemic. In this MMANC session, staff from the County of San Mateo will share about how their practices and strategies enabled them to go from the Governor’s funding announcement to serving hundreds of clients in just two weeks. Staff will also share how they worked across departments and leveraged community partnerships to serve 18 meals per week to over 4500 older adults and coordinate over 81 local restaurants to serve program clients in a county of 760,000 people. Staff will share why the county decided to directly administer the program instead of contracting out its administration, and staff will provide valuable lessons on how government can react nimbly to new opportunities to serve their community. Staff will also share how they were able to use the program to identify post-pandemic social service needs for program clients, many of whom had not previously interacted with their county’s social service programs. This session will also include a discussion about how the program was structured to successfully achieve its double bottom line goals of preserving restaurants and jobs, as the program preserved or created between 300 and 550 full-time jobs.
