The Valley Consortium for Medical Education (VCME) is a nonprofit organization that is governed and overseen by a six-member board that includes representation from the county, a nonprofit hospital, a for profit hospital, and soon to be joined by an FQHC. This unique partnership that created VCME is for Family Medicine physician training and Orthopedic physician training to train and retain physicians needed in our community. VCME seeks an inclusive, engaged, collaborative, and communicative CEO/Executive Director (CEO) to lead the organization, overseeing five direct staff, and an approximate budget of $10 million. This visionary leader will direct the implementation of the VCME Strategic Plan and have oversight of administrative and human resources functions, two physician residency programs, budgetary and financial transactions of VCME, resource developCment (grants, other funding, and/or partnership opportunities), and the expansion and growth of VCME’s programs, organization, and staffing. The CEO will be an experienced business professional who has extensive experience in health and business administration and preferably knowledge of physician training programs. They have experience overseeing multi-million-dollar budgets and political and emotional intelligence to work effectively with Board members, hospital administrators, physicians, elected officials, and other community partners. The CEO reports to the VCME Board of Directors, overseeing five direct staff and an approximate $10 million annual budget with intentions of growing administratively, programmatically, and fiscally. This position is responsible for overseeing policy, programs, goals, vision, business and community partnerships and development and the success of the organization through their educational programs. The CEO will also oversee compliance, accreditation standards, and requirements for Residency programs. The CEO manages the operations of Valley Family Medicine Residency of Modesto and the Valley Orthopedic Surgery Residency of Modesto, helping to coordinate allopathic and osteopathic physician pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training programs and developing resources to meet the current and future needs for physicians and other health professionals. They will serve as a leader who can improve the local retention of trained physicians. In addition to bringing a strong background and experience in business, administrative, and organizational development, the ideal candidate should demonstrate emotional intelligence, have a strong understanding of how health care services are delivered in a community, and ideally have knowledge and experience on how private, public, nonprofit, and public sector agencies interlace and function as partners in a community health care environment. They ensure VCME fosters a learning environment where resident development as a physician is achieved. It is essential that the next CEO has exemplary interpersonal skills, as they will communicate VCME program interests to the community served, allied hospitals, governmental participants, other healthcare providers, and organizations.

The ideal candidate will serve as a voice for the health care needs in the community and be a creative and innovative problem solver. VCME needs a forward-thinking, communicative, and collaborative leader who removes barriers and supports and empowers staff. The ideal candidate will have a high level of emotional intelligence, demonstrate diplomacy, leverage the strengths of our community partners, and successfully build relationships with all groups within the community. They will be committed to the organization, ensuring it is successful for years to come. The CEO will be a strong negotiator, come up with a range of long-term solutions, and use analytical thinking to make smart decisions. Public speaking and presentation skills are important for the role, as the CEO will often communicate complex information in a well-thought-out, easily understood manner.

Employment Standards

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework preferably in Business Management or other Leadership courses.
  • Possess at least 3 years of recent, full-time management experience in a residency or related field; OR
  • Possess at least ten (10) years of progressively responsible leadership responsibilities in management experience in a residency or related field.


  • Master’s degree


An annual salary of $150,000 – $243,000 and an attractive benefits package.
