Building Inspector II (Cert): $102,767 – $121,895 DOE/DOQ
The City of Berkeley, California, is seeking two Building Inspector I/IIs (Certified) who are passionate about their work and dedicated to providing high-quality inspection services to our customers. In this role, you will have the opportunity to perform a variety of residential-related inspection work, enforcing building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, zoning, and related codes and regulations that govern housing, new building construction, remodeling, and repair. You will be working under the direction of the Supervising Building Inspector but are expected to be able to often work independently to meet the needs of our customers and resolve any outstanding inquiries. Much of your role will involve providing construction-related advice to property owners and contractors, ensuring that they are fully informed about the codes and regulations that apply to their projects; making customer service and emotional intelligence critical to the role. Your responsibilities will also include reviewing building plans, issuing occupancy permits, investigating complaints, writing inspection reports, and issuing Notices of Violation. THE JOB
The Building Inspector I/II (Certified) will conduct various inspection tasks. These will include enforcing building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, zoning, and related codes and regulations that govern new building construction, remodeling, repair, and housing. This individual will report directly to the Supervising Building Inspector and will work to meet the needs of customers and resolve any outstanding inquiries. Much of the role will involve providing construction-related advice to both property owners and contractors. Other key responsibilities will include reviewing building plans, issuing occupancy permits, investigating complaints, writing inspection reports, and issuing Notices of Violation. In addition, the Building Inspector may serve on the Building Assessment Team, train staff, and recommend procedural improvements.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidates for these exciting opportunities will be customer-service focused with experience working on complex residential inspection projects. They will be eager to address a variety of property owner and contractor questions while demonstrating a high level of communication skills and emotional intelligence. The successful candidate will be helpful and supportive, as they balance their independent responsibilities with the needs of their team. They will have an in-depth understanding of various building construction craft areas, such as plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, remodeling, and zoning. The successful candidates will have a high attention to detail and the ability to use critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in their everyday work.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Building Inspector I & II (Certified)
- Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving for City business, maintenance of a valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required.
Building Inspector I (Certified)
- High school diploma, GED equivalency, or a high school proficiency certificate, AND
- One (1) year full time experience or equivalent as a building inspector with a public agency, OR
- Four (4) years full time experience as a journey level carpenter, electrician, plumber, building plans examiner, public works inspector or permit specialist, OR
- Three (3) years of full-time experience or its equivalent in the building construction field as a licensed general, plumbing, electrical or mechanical contractor, OR
- Completion of a two-year AA program or equivalent in construction technology or a related field and a minimum of four ICC certificates including building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical.
- Must possess a valid International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector Certificate or equivalent as determined by the building official in accordance with state law. Certification must be maintained as a condition of employment.
Building Inspector II (Certified)
- Equivalent to graduation from high school, AND
- Three years of full-time experience at the level of Building Inspector I with a public agency.
- Must possess BOTH a valid International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector Certificate AND (ICC) Electrical Inspector Certificate or equivalent as determined by the building official in accordance with state law. Certification must be maintained as a condition of employment.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The annual salary is $95,872 – $113,738 (Building Inspector I – Cert) and $102,767 – $121,895 (Building Inspector II – Cert) DOE/DOQ, plus a generous benefits package
