Water Treatment Plant Operator

DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, incumbents independently operate the Water Treatment Plant on an assigned shift performing a variety of duties essential to the safe operation of the City’s Water Treatment Plant.  Incumbents also follow standing orders for emergency action required to operate the plant.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a journey level class in which incumbents operate the Water Treatment Plant independently under general supervision.  Operators may advance to the Sr. Water Treatment Plant Operator class without further competition upon meeting the minimum qualifications for certification and experience, in conformance with the applicable labor agreement provisions.

This class is distinguished from the Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee class in that these journey level operators may work independently on an assigned shift without direct supervision.  Employees in this class have demonstrated a full understanding of all treatment processes and procedures and may be required to provide training to less experienced operators as directed.  Operators in this class may also oversee operations in the absence of a Sr. Water Treatment Plant Operator and/or the Water Operations Supervisor.

This class is distinguished from the Sr. Water Treatment Plant Operator class in that incumbents in the senior level class, while also independently operating the plant, provide feedback to the Water Operations Supervisor with respect to the performance of lower levels operators and do provide recommendations relating to operating procedures.
