ABOUT THE POSITION 

The City of Mill Valley Building Official oversees the Building Division of the Planning & Building Department, managing enforcement activities, providing plan review, issuing permits, and collecting fees while ensuring compliance with all relevant codes, laws, and ordinances. This role also involves conducting and supervising inspections of buildings and structures throughout all stages of construction, alteration, and repair.

The Building Division consists of six (6) dedicated full-time employees: the Building Official, two (2) Building Inspectors, a Permit Services Coordinator, a Permit Technician, and an Administrative Assistant. This small, but efficient team issues approximately 1,300 permits, conducts around 3,500 inspections, and processes 175 RBRs each year. The average annual budget for the Building Division for the next two (2) years is approximately $1.5 million.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a dynamic leader with a robust background in building code administration and a genuine passion for enhancing community safety and development. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in either a municipal building division or a comprehensive background in construction and the trades with building inspection experience. Preference will be given to those who possess or have begun working toward their Building Official certification.

Success in this role requires the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and effectively manage high-pressure situations. We seek an individual who excels in collaborative leadership, serving as a supportive manager and mentor. SALARY AND BENEFITS

$9,960- $13,346/Monthly (Depending on Qualifications)

Leave – the City offers generous leave, including:

  • Vacation – 2 to 5 weeks depending on service time
  • Sick – 12 days per year
  • Holidays – 15 total (11 named plus 4 floating) per year
  • Administrative Leave – 40 hours per fiscal year

Retirement – CalPERS and 457 Deferred Compensation Plan

  •  CalPERS (PEPRA) 2% at 62 / CalPERS (Classic) 2% at 55
  • 457 Deferred Compensation Plan with a City contribution of 0.5% (in addition this position receives a City match up to a maximum of $900.00/year)

Schedule

  • City staff typically work a “9/80” schedule with alternating Fridays off
