The Planning Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the 10-person Planning Division, which includes current and advanced planning units. The Planning Manager will oversee all planning activities for the City of Modesto including the Comprehensive Urban Area General Plan Update, numerous specific plans and specific plan amendments, zoning updates and implementation of the recently prepared plans.. The Planning Manager is a people manager and a working manager.

Ideally, the City’s new Planning Manager will be innovative and creative. We are looking for an idea person to fill this role. Most importantly, they will be customer-focused, and solution orientated. This position requires extensive public speaking, so the ideal candidate will have experience delivery speeches and talks to large groups. The ideal candidate will have a list of several projects they have been successful in completing over the course of their career.

The ideal candidate will have experience in and knowledge of urban planning, environmental review, land usage and division, and growth management. The perfect candidate will have a solid understanding of the federal, state, and local laws, codes, rules, and regulations.

The ideal candidate for the Planning manager will have strong leadership practices, experience building a team, and experience handling highly political projects and situations.
