The City seeks an experienced, well-regarded financial professional to effectively lead this important department. The successful candidate will report to the City Manager and work closely with department heads using their strong technical knowledge to advise policy makers on decisions affecting the long-term financial health of the City. The ideal candidate will position the Finance Department as a valuable business partner and provide responsive service and accurate information.

This strategic partner will be up to date with finance best practices and actively apply this knowledge not just to meet the City’s needs, but to propel it forward. A thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, government accounting standards, managing investments and treasury services, and the ability to establish and monitor internal controls are critical for success. The Director will have experience assessing, recommending, and successfully implementing needed changes in the department and across an organization.
Technical expertise coupled with excellent communication skills are sought to allow the Director to translate complex financial information into terms that others can understand. These skills will be put to regular use when making public presentations including when speaking to elected and appointed officials.

In order to be an outstanding fit with Pleasanton’s high-caliber Executive Team, the ideal candidate will be a hands-on manager and have a record of collaborating across departments, engendering a collegial tone, taking an interest in matters outside of finance, and prospering in a team-orientated environment focused on accomplishing citywide goals. A current organizational priority in which the new Director will be actively involved is implementing the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan. The ideal candidate also will have experience supporting and incorporating the use of technology to improve operations as well as familiarity with ERP Systems. The City uses Tyler-Munis as its integrated financial and human resources system.

This professional will be an approachable leader who encourages staff development with a mentoring, team-oriented style. The ideal candidate will be committed to coaching staff, providing learning opportunities, enhancing employees’ knowledge and skills, and maximizing their potential while also maintaining performance accountability. This individual will engage the team, demonstrate compassion, and inspire others to do their best work. A Director who participates in and fosters a fun, inclusive environment is desired as are experience in recruiting, supervising, and mentoring a diverse staff with a customer-centric approach.

The successful candidate will possess any combination of experience and education that provides the knowledge and abilities necessary for successful job performance, with the ideal candidate having increasingly responsible and substantial municipal finance experience at a management level along with a strong understanding of local governmental financial operations. Qualifications also include a bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration, public administration or a closely related field. A master’s degree in the same is desired.
