What to Expect In Your First Year:
1. Lead the Development of the City’s First Parks and Recreation Master Plan – The successful candidate will spearhead the solicitation, management, and adoption of a comprehensive master plan that will guide the future of parks and recreation services for years to come.
2. Drive Capital Projects in Partnership with Public Works – Collaborate on high-impact projects, including:
• Sports lighting installation
• Courtyard redesigns
• Facility refreshes that enhance accessibility, safety, and community use
3. Conduct a Citywide Sports Field Analysis – Lead the effort to assess current field conditions, usage, and
future needs to support youth and adult sports programming.
4. Reopen a Neighborhood Facility to Serve Community Needs – Champion the revitalization and reopening of a key neighborhood facility, ensuring it reflects the voices and priorities of local residents.
5. Lead the City’s 50th Birthday Celebrations – Coordinate and oversee a year-long celebration that honors
Rancho Cucamonga’s rich history and bright future, bringing together residents, businesses, and partners in a
series of unforgettable events.
6. Activate the Epicenter Sports Complex – Support the launch and programming of this major regional asset, ensuring it becomes a hub for recreation, tournaments, and community pride.
7. Launch the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center Courtyard Stage – Bring the newly redesigned courtyard stage to life with performances, cultural events, and community gatherings that reflect the diversity and creativity of our city.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Director of Community Services must have a positive influence on day-to-day operations, a “can-do” attitude,
and be comfortable with a hands-on, proactive approach to all aspects of department procedures. The ideal candidate will have a natural interest in mentoring and guiding staff, explaining strategy, procedures and how to
effectively and efficiently achieve City established goals. The selected individual will have exceptional management, interpersonal and communication skills.
Additionally, the ideal candidate must be recognized as having the ability to provide the Department with the following:
• Proven experience in parks and recreation or community services
• Strong project management and interdepartmental coordinator skills.
• A passion for public service and inclusive planning.
• Display outstanding character, integrity, and professionalism.
• Ability to build consensus and provide a positive example.
• Ability to embrace and effectively implement new ideas, and a genuine interest in the community and the broad range of issues facing the City of Rancho Cucamonga.
• Consistently communicate and implement the City’s mission and values
• Creative problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to analyze and resolve complex and sensitive issues, problems, and situations.
• Display an outgoing communicative style; one that is comfortable working with a variety of individuals at any level in the organization.
• A good listener; open and approachable with new ideas.
• Excellent writing skills; a highly articulate oral communicative style, and the ability to clearly explain complex issues to a wide variety of constituents.
• Proactive at providing information to the City Manager, Deputy City Managers and other City department directors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s Degree in recreation or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• A Master’s Degree in a related field is highly desirable.
• Eight years of increasingly responsible administrative experience in public recreation and
park program management or any combination of training and experience that provides
the desired knowledge and abilities.
