Assistant Civil Engineer

DEFINITION
Under direction, to perform professional civil engineering work in the planning, design, technical investigation, and construction of projects in the areas of public works, transportation, capital improvements and structural engineering; to provide staff assistance to the Director of Public Services and others on complex issues or projects; and to perform related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Incumbents report to the Director of Public Services or designee and may provide direction and training to personnel.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey level classification in the series not requiring registration as a professional engineer.  Incumbents perform the moderately difficult professional engineering work in civil engineering and receive general direction from the Director of Public Services or other management and supervisory staff. Incumbents may have responsibility for technical or functional supervision of assigned subordinate staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
A typical way of gaining the knowledge and skills outlined above is:

Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in civil engineering or a closely related field;

OR

Possession of a current Engineer-in-Training Certificate, issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers, and

One (1) year of professional civil engineering experience.

Associate Civil Engineer

DEFINITION
Under general supervision,  performs complex professional and technical engineering work in assigned area of responsibility, including but not limited to, planning, design, land development, traffic engineering and capital improvements for  a variety of public works facilities, systems, projects, and/or private development projects and programs; provides project management on engineering  projects; administers state and federal grant funds associated with assigned  projects; provides highly complex staff assistance to management staff and others; performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Incumbents report to management personnel and may supervise or provide direction and training to assigned personnel.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is an advanced journey level classification requiring registration as a professional engineer in California. This class is distinguished from the Assistant Civil Engineer by assignment of the full range of professional engineering duties, and the requirement to be registered as a professional engineer within the State of California. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university;

AND

Three (3) years of professional engineering experience equivalent to that of an Assistant Civil Engineer with the City of Rocklin.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer, issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers is required at the time of appointment.
