THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
Our Assistant City Engineer position is a dynamic and innovative leadership role that excels in personnel and project management with a focus on overseeing engineering projects from inception to completion, ensuring adherence to budget, timelines, and quality standards. This individual will support the City Engineer in managing municipal engineering projects and ensure smooth operations within the department. This is a mid-management level position that will assist in managing and developing staff. A successful candidate will have experience in community engagement, staff report writing, and project presentations.

The ideal candidate will also develop and implement management strategies to optimize departmental efficiency and project outcomes, review and approve engineering plans, specifications, and contracts and address and resolve any issues that arise during project execution. As a project manager, this position spends much of their time managing staff and helping them see projects to completion. The ability to represent the city in public meetings, providing clear and concise project updates in both writing and through presentations is highly desirable. A successful incumbent will have experience writing staff reports and presenting the reports to City Council.     Education and Experience Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and four (4) years of increasingly complex administrative, supervisory, or management experience in the public sector performing professional civil engineering work.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

  • Possession and maintenance of a Registered Professional Civil Engineer or Registered Traffic Engineer license in the State of California.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license upon appointment.
  • May be required to complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) Training.
