Tucked in a beautiful, box canyon surrounded by breathtaking rugged peaks and waterfalls, the Town of Telluride is an all-season resort town. Originally founded as a mining camp in the 1870s, Telluride reinvented itself in the 1970s as a skiing destination. Today, Telluride (pop. 2,473, elev. 8,750 ft, 2.2 sq mi) is known for its superb skiing, authentic mountain character, and unpretentious attitude, as well as for its cultural events, fine dining, and unmatched, signature festival schedule.  The adopted FY 2022 Budget is $52.1 million (GF $17.7 million), supporting 92 FTE, and between 25-35 seasonal employees.

This career opportunity is available with the announced retirement of current public works director, who has served Telluride for over 33 years, the last 10 as director.  In the town’s history, only three persons have held the public works director title, all serving at least ten years each. The public works department has a 2022 departmental budget of $16.1 million, supporting 28 FTE in the following areas: streets, water and wastewater utilities, facilities, fleet management, transit, engineering (including environmental), and administration.  The town’s 2022 capital projects budget is $4.0 million.

A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, public administration, business administration, or a closely related field, plus ten years of increasingly responsible experience in public works, including three to five years of supervisory and administrative responsibility in public works, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and abilities needed for this position are required.  A professional engineering license is preferred.

The annual salary range for this position is $117,851 to $170,884 DOQE, plus relocation assistance and a substantial housing opportunity.  Comprehensive benefits: medical, dental, vision, life, AD&D, and long-term disability insurances; Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts; and various EAP programs.
