The Department of Public Work’s Waste Management Division seeks qualified candidates for the position of a Waste Management Specialist. There is currently one full-time (75 hours bi-weekly) vacancy.

Please allow us to introduce you the Waste Management Specialist position within our Waste Management Division, where we work diligently to reduce the impacts of climate change and conserve natural resources by developing and implementing innovative programs and projects that reduce waste at the source.

Join a group of enthusiastic environmental professionals dedicated to supporting the health of our environment, promoting recycling and composting programs, and ensuring regulatory compliance for all our cities and towns under SB 1383.

This position will aid in the reporting of SB 1383 progress. You will work with our staff on data collection from all member agencies and aid in the reporting to CalRecycle. Provide boots on the groundwork in educating and training local agencies as required under the law. Administer education, outreach materials, and trainings to waste generators including the County of Marin and Jurisdiction staff, community groups, and the public.

At times, this position may require working extended and weekend hours. Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors and include working community events, public meetings and providing presentations. Excellent communication skills including professional writing and public speaking are essential.

The position of Waste Management Specialist reports to the Waste Management Program Manager but may take direction from a Senior Planner.

ABOUT YOUThe Highly Qualified Candidate:

Knowledge of: Waste management, local and state laws and regulations.  Deep understanding of AB 1826, SB 341, and SB 1383. Principles and practices of implementing programs. Utilization of industry specific best practice models. Tools to research information on best practices for outreach & education regarding regulations.

Skill in: Excellent writing, time management, fostering and maintaining productive relationships with various stakeholders, data management systems, application use (especially Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint), public speaking, delivering presentations and is comfortable tabling various events with different stakeholders.  The candidate will have experience and knowledge in the operation of local government including public processes. They will have personal and professional integrity, be highly organized, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service.

Ability to: Provide clear communication, function independently and work as part of a growing, dynamic team. Prepare and present reports within applicable time limits before various stakeholders. Be able to compile information accurately.

Possession of a degree in the environmental sciences, engineering, or closely related field, a valid California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, an Occupational Safety and Health Administration Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (OSHA HAZWOPER) training certification, and fluency in English/Spanish (pay differential eligible after passing bilingual proficiency exam), will further ensure your success in this role.
