ABOUT THE POSITIONThe Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Probation Department are announcing a recruitment for the position of Juvenile Corrections Officer I.  There are two (2) vacancies that will be filled at either the JCO I or II level. To be considered for the JCO II, please submit a separate application.

Juvenile Corrections Officers provide supervision, custody and care of minors detained in the Marin County Juvenile Hall following established policy and procedure. Juvenile Corrections Officers play an important role in initiating the process of change and making each juvenile’s detention as positive and productive as possible.

Bilingual assignments are distinguished by the required proficiency in the English language as well as a designated second language, in this case, Spanish. Proficiency requires the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form, sufficient to convey information and instructions to the public and other employees.

BILINGUAL CERTIFICATION: Successful candidates must demonstrate proficiency in Spanish/ English to be eligible for bilingual pay. A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure the candidate possesses the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements of the position.

ABOUT YOUThe Highly Qualified Candidate:  The highly qualified candidate possesses a combination of education and experience that provides a general understanding of the issues surrounding a juvenile population in a criminal justice setting. The candidate will have experience monitoring the health and well-being of a group of youths, taking into account human behavior patterns and the social, economic and ethnic factors of the population and the ability to identify problems, assess alternative courses of action and exercise sound reasoning in order to arrive at logical conclusions.  In addition, the ideal candidate must have personal and professional integrity; be highly organized; possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills; approach their work with enthusiasm; demonstrate a strong commitment to empowerment through communication, collaboration, and cooperation.

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of 60 semester units from a college or university which included a minimum of 12 semester units in behavioral sciences, social welfare, social case work, counseling and guidance, psychology, criminology, corrections, education, recreation, or a closely related field.

Certificates and Licenses:
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s license is required and must be maintained while employed in the classification.

California Government Code Section 1031 requires that all applicants:

Be 21 years of age or older by the application filing deadline date.
Have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness (felony law convictions will be disqualifying).
Be a citizen of the United States (or must have filed for citizenship with the Department of Immigration one year prior to employment application date).
Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
Complete and pass a comprehensive psychological test administered by the Probation Department or designated agency.

Testing and Eligible List: Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination may consist of a highly qualified review, application screening, online assessment, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates’ names will be placed on the eligible list.

The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions which may occur while the list remains active.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: No person shall be considered for employment as a sworn officer with the Marin County Probation Department if they have a drug history involving illicit drug use within the last three years, and marijuana use since submission of application, or have ever engaged in felonious drug activity.

Important COVID-19 Information: Depending on work assignment and applicable State or Federal Public Health Order, some employees may be required to be fully vaccinated and/or consent to weekly COVID-19 testing. To help mitigate transmission, masks are required for all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, in certain workplace settings per the California Department of Public Health and masks are strongly recommended by the Marin County Public Health Officer in all other settings.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
