The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District, established in 2002 through California State Assembly Bill 2224, is a cornerstone of public transportation in Sonoma and Marin Counties. With over seventy miles of railroad right-of-way, SMART provides a vital transportation link across the region, offering a significant alternative to highway congestion.

The Role
As Assistant General Counsel, you will handle complex legal matters and serve as a key advisor in areas including contract law, labor and employment, construction, real estate, and administrative law. This position requires conducting litigation, drafting and overseeing legal documents, and offering counsel to the General Counsel and other department staff.

SMART is looking for:

A solution-oriented, highly organized attorney with experience in transit districts or similar public sectors.
Skilled in civil litigation with a profound understanding of state and federal court procedures.
Excellent interpersonal skills, able to handle sensitive situations with diplomacy.
Qualifications

Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited college or university.
At least five years of relevant legal experience.
Active membership in good standing in the State Bar of California.
