Parks Manager

Southgate Recreation & Park District is seeking a talented professional to fill the role of their Parks Manager. This is a rewarding opportunity to join a team committed to providing recreation and park services to residents of South Sacramento, a socially, economically, and culturally diverse community. Southgate Recreation & Park District is an independent special district established in 1956 to serve the residents of South Sacramento and is governed by an elected five-member Board of Directors.

The District encompasses a 52-square mile area of unincorporated South Sacramento County. In this area, the District currently maintains 47 parks, 11 community centers, 2 aquatic facilities, a golf course, and numerous landscape corridors and nature preserves. The District’s primary goal and its public charge is to provide recreation and park services to the 134,300 residents it serves.  Over the next twenty years, the District expects to add approximately 500 acres of park land and green space as new subdivision developments occur.

Working as an Parks Manager

The Parks Manager will report to the General Manager, and perform responsible, professional level work by administering, planning, organizing, and directing the maintenance, operation, and management of the Parks Department.  This position will be responsible for supervising and directing 33 (5 direct reports and 28 indirect reports) personnel in the performance of activities related to the maintenance and construction of parks, landscape corridors, recreational facilities, playgrounds, open spaces, and the repair of maintenance equipment and vehicles.

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, traits, and competencies:

·         Supervisory knowledge and skills; ability to effectively plan, guide, and direct the work of the department and its diverse personnel

·         Knowledge of plant nomenclature and adaptabilities, horticulture, plant pathology, arboriculture, and park management

·         Knowledge of OSHA Safety practices and knowledge of the use and storage of chemicals

·         Knowledge of irrigation systems and computerized central irrigation control software

·         Knowledge of basic budgeting procedures

·         Outstanding communication skills through written correspondence and reports as well as verbal presentations

·         The ability to make detailed plans and specifications, ability to manage multiple projects

·         Ability to make decisions objectively; assess situations and make sound recommendations

·         Exceptional interpersonal skills; ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with schools, public agencies, and diverse community organizations

·         Ability to work and collaborate effectively with numerous stakeholders

·         Comfortable working in a changing and dynamic environment
