This role will have two direct reports, while overseeing a team of 25 staff and an approximate budget of $39.8 million. THE JOB/THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Electric Utility Director (Director) will provide leadership for all the operations and activities of the Department. They will manage the Department’s Capital Improvement Program and budget, requiring this leader to be fiscally minded and highly organized. Along with their technical oversight, the Director will have personnel management responsibilities, such as setting Department goals, conducting performance reviews, and mentoring staff. Much of this role includes engaging with the District’s joint partners — UAMPS,  NCPA, and California Municipal Utilities Association (CMUA) — requiring them to have exemplary relationship-building and communication skills. The ideal candidate will also have specialized knowledge of energy resource portfolio development, regional energy market issues, and regulatory trends necessary to formulate energy resource procurement strategies with joint partners and key stakeholder groups.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated cultural competence to effectively interact and develop meaningful relationships with people of diverse identities, perspectives, and cultural backgrounds. They will be a respectful leader with high emotional intelligence, proficiency at teambuilding, and excellent listening skills. The ideal candidate will be a strong negotiator, often working on collective bargaining agreements and power contracts. They will be safety-focused, attentive to detail, and committed to improving efficiencies. Having a strong business and entrepreneurial approach while understanding the complexities of utility operations is a must for this role, as is being strategic, forward-thinking, and eager to take on challenges. The successful candidate will foster and maintain strong relationships with District leadership, customers, community, and other key stakeholders that align with the District’s climate, sustainability, resiliency, and energy goals.

Qualifying Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be:

·         Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a closely related field

·         10 years of experience in the operation of an electric system, utility system engineering, or power supply

·         7 years at the management level or equivalent in the utilities industry

·         An advanced degree

·         Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer with the State of California

Salary and Benefits

The salary range is: $197,632 – $240,225 DOE/DOQ annually; plus, a generous benefits package
