These trainings are free to local government staff and partners in Salinas and surrounding communities.
MMANC and the City of Salinas will co-host a casual networking lunch at Monterey Coast Brewing between the two training sessions. Registration ($20) for the networking lunch is separate from the training sessions. Please register here for the networking lunch.
About the Trainings
Problem Solving Using Data & Analytics – 9:30 – 11:00 am
Cities around the world are using data to generate insights and address key community challenges. Drawing on best practices from successful performance analytics programs, this workshop will walk participants through a framework designed to help city leaders take a data-driven approach to solving city problems.
Data Storytelling – 1:00 – 3:00 pm
A story can be found virtually anywhere, but a good story has several key elements to make it interesting for the audience. Data serves to help tell a story. It can be added to a narrative in order to explain the impact—a success, a challenge, or even a surprise—in greater detail. This session is designed to enable participants to build a story using data and analysis by identifying successes and communicating more effectively about the impact of the work.
About What Works Cities, GovEx, and the City of Salinas
What Works Cities is an initiative launched by Bloomberg Philanthropies in April 2015 to help cities across the United States enhance their use of data and evidence to improve services, inform local decision-making, and engage residents.
GovEx is a partner in the What Works Cities Initiative located at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, leading technical assistance and strategic trainings for government employees that enhance city’s capacities to leverage cutting-edge data management, performance management, and advanced analytics to improve outcomes for residents across all policy areas.
The City of Salinas was one of the first 100 cities in the US to participate in What Works Cities and is excited to host this popup training. This popup training event follows the highly successful 2018 Regional Innovation Summit, and is the City’s second effort to help raise awareness and share ideas with our colleagues around data driven, smart city concepts. The City continues to implement Evidence-Based Policy, whereby policy decisions are informed by rigorously established, objective evidence and continues to engage with Bloomberg Philanthropies and its partners, to reach its goal of transforming local government.
